Weekend Recap (Better late than never)

I can’t believe it’s already Thursday and I’m just writing this now! Not only was the weekend full of activity I feel like this week is crazy as well!  I feel like I’ve done so much lately that if I wrote about everything in detail we would be here for hours. So here is a quick Rachel catch up session…with some pictures to go along with it 🙂

Thursday night was the Chase Corporate Challenge. When I said there would be a lot of people I meant it, 23,000 people (which meant 46,000 elbows to avoid) later we made it to the finish line!

Friday night I met my best friend downtown at Bottles and Bottega, a BYOB art class. I am not artistic with a paintbrush, but I thought my artwork turned out pretty well.

Saturday I needed to sweat out the wine from the night before so I did an Insanity DVD, Plyometric Cardio Circuit. Sorry I don’t have any photos of me sweating my butt off but don’t worry…it was insane. After doing some more yardwork on Saturday, Adam and I met up with some of his past clients for a happy hour followed by some sushi. I was able to enjoy my first Summer Shandy of the season.

I woke up at 6:45 am on Sunday to run 7 miles for training. I wanted to get it in before it got too hot…I’m very glad I did because it got up to 97 later in the day! I was proud of myself…7 miles in 1 hr and 3 min. A lot better than my run last week!

In the afternoon we went to my parents house for a BBQ. My aunt and uncle from Wisconsin were in town, I haven’t seen them since Christmas so it was nice to catch up. Oh, and Adam got to drive my Uncle’s Corvette…probably the highlight of his day.

Sunday night, Adam, Howell, and I went on an adventure to Redbox to pick up Iron Man 2 (I’ve never seen it and after seeing Avengers I thought I should). Well…lesson of the day…check the Redbox you’re walking a mile and a half to before you leave to see if the movie you want is there. At least we got a good walk in? Good news though, Iron Man 2 was on Netflix so we got to watch it anyways.

Monday was a catch up day…a trip to the grocery store, hardware store, and the gym. I was very excited to actually lift again! I decided to repeat the Total Body workout I did a few weeks ago. It’s a good workout and I didn’t want to focus too much on only one part of my body.

We ended the weekend with the perfect summer meal: grilled chicken breast, grilled corn, and watermelon.

I think it’s okay to say summer is officially here! What did you do this weekend to celebrate the beginning of summer? Were you able to fit in a few workouts between all the parties?

We’re having a Summer kick-off BBQ this weekend with friends.  I never realized how much work is needed to put together a BBQ.  I have numerous lists going!

Chase Corporate Challenge

It’s less than 2 months until the half marathon… and my knees already aren’t happy with my decision to run this. Yesterday when I was running on the treadmill (it was suppose to be a 4 mile day), I was bored. I found myself glancing over towards the weights and everyone lifting. I miss it! I’m sore after my runs, but it’s a different type of sore. I only made it to 3 miles before I called it quits. I wasn’t mentally in it, so another mile was not going to happen. But this is something I want to achieve…if only once, I want to run a half marathon. July 23rd I can go back to my normal routine. Until then I have to get my head in the game (Sorry I had to link it…Zac Efron gets me everytime…sigh)

Tonight I’m running the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge for my company. It’s 3.5 miles with 22,000 other people. Last year I spent most of the time dodging people, but I ran a 8 min mile pace while doing it. Probably because it was more of a game then a race. Also, last year it was 40 degrees and raining while this year it is suppose to be 80 degrees and very windy. Oh Chicago weather.

Workouts

Monday: Full Body Workout then 35 minutes on the StairMaster

Tuesday: Ran 3 miles and some abs

Wednesday: Ran 3 miles and 10 min on the bike

Summer Weekends Start with Lilac Days

On Friday I decided to take a half day at work…and I’m so glad I did! It was beautiful outside. Adam and I started the afternoon at Brickhouse, enjoyed lunch and an adult beverage outside, then headed to Home Depot to pick up some flowers. When we got home I turned on the music outside and spent the afternoon planting some flowers while Adam spray painted our patio furniture. The best parts about my Friday afternoon:

-My only Ipod that works at the moment is a generation II Ipod from high school. This meant some awesome throwbacks throughout the afternoon.

-My Grandpa gave us his patio furniture and we decided to paint it red. It looks really good! I’m excited about it. I’ll post a picture when it’s done.

-I actually did some gardening. Now we have to see how long the plants actually last and if any tomatoes actually grow.

Friday night Adam and I participated in a Lilac Days beer tasting in the town’s Lilacia Park. It was a lot of fun! Since it was just Adam and I we met two other very nice couples at our table of 6. We split six different bottles of beer then got to choose one from the list to have afterwards. My favorite was the New Belgium Shift. Which one on the menu do you think would have been your favorite??

image

On Saturday morning I ran my 6 mile run for half marathon training. It was a rough one. Not only was I a little dehydrated from the beer tasting but it was my first hot weather run of the season (I even got my first running sunburn). Thankfully the prairie path has drinking fountains every few miles…I took full advantage of each one of them!

Yesterday I spent almost the entire day outside! In the morning I went and watching Adam play soccer in a men’s rec league and in the afternoon we went to the Lilac Day parade in downtown Lombard. It is my first year as a Lombard resident and I was impressed with the parade. It was almost 2 hours long and included the Jesse White Tumblers and Civil War reenactments. Sadly, there was no candy throwing. That seems to be a thing of the past now but it always was my favorite part of parades when I was younger.

It’s too bright!

How did you enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend?? Are you ready for summer?

Now it’s The Bachelorette time 🙂 Enjoy your Monday night!

Healthy lunch!

Just a quick post to say how proud of myself I am right now. (I promise I’m not trying to brag…I just wanted to tell someone!)

Today we are having a team lunch meeting and everyone ordered Portillos.  Even though most of my co-workers are ordering the chopped salad (yum…) I resisted and decided to stick with my lunch I brought from home. A spinach salad with chicken breath, tomato, and some avocado. (I should’ve taken a picture before I shook it up with dressing)

image

Resisting junk food and desserts has always been my downfall. I haven’t been happy with how I look and feel lately and I’m pretty sure my diet has a lot to do with it.

This week I really wanted to focus on a cleaner diet and skipping out on Portillos was a pretty good first step.

Successful Mother’s Day and other Random Wednesday Facts

1. I made my Mom cry on Mother’s Day (Happy tears, of course).  My present was a hit.  I made a collage of old and new pictures of my mom, my sister and I with the Taylor Swift lyrics, “The Best Day.”  I love family days.  Yesterday I spent most of the afternoon with my family and dinner at PF Chang’s with Adam’s family…it was perfect.

2. Last night when I went to the grocery store the man checking me out told me I eat too healthy. I’m not sure if he was trying to compliment me, but I took it as a compliment. It especially made me feel good because I purposely was trying to shop very healthy…I guess mission accomplished. I want to get back to a clean diet. Since living on my own I know I haven’t been eating as healthy and clean as I was when my Dad was cooking dinners every night.

3. Bachelorette started this week! Although some of the guys seem a little full of themselves…I think there are a few good ones. When I was watching the Bachelor last season I stumbled upon a spoiler of the winner online about a month before the end of the show. It wasn’t as fun to watch when I know who wins before it ends. So this season I am not reading anything online. Although, it was fun to read Reality Steves take on the season while the season was going on.  Are you watching the Bachlorette…do you already have a favorite??

It always takes a few weeks for me to get all of the guys names down, but Jeff, the skateboarder/Water CEO, really stuck out to me as a genuine and down to earth guy.  He is a little different though so it will be interesting to see how long he sticks around.

4. This week is beautiful in Chicagoland. I hate being stuck in my cubicle but we have been going on walks at lunch. It’s good to get out and stretch our legs when the weather is nice. Although yesterday it made the afternoon crawl by because I just wanted to go back outside.

5. I’m playing sand volleyball again today after work! Yay!

Workouts

Friday:

Rest Day!

Saturday:

Ran 5 miles on the treadmill. I was upset that it was raining all morning so I had to run inside BUT I decided to venture over to LA Fitness in Oakbrook. The treadmills are so high-tech! Not only do they have touch screens but they have an Ipod hookup to play your music through the treadmill and a USB port to save your workout when your done. The weights and machines looked very nice as well…I’ll have to take another trip over there sometime soon to do some lifting.

Sunday:

Since I was really busy with Mother’s Day and family activites I didn’t have time for an actual workout. I did however do some weeding around the yard. There were times where my thighs were burning from squatting down to pull the weeds.

Monday:

Lifted Back/Biceps/Triceps and 30 minutes on the Stairmaster. With all the running I’m going for the Half Marathon I forgot how much I miss a tough lifting session. It felt good to be a little sore again this morning.

Do you have a random Wednesday Fact to share?

I Like Big Butts?

I found this on Pinterest this morning.

image

Story of my Life. I have a big butt, thanks to 13 years of playing volleyball. In the past it has been called a bubble butt. We have a love, hate relationship. Most of the hate comes when shopping for clothes or deciding what I want to wear.

I like this ad though. My body has always been a point of internal struggle and my guess is it also is for a lot of other women. But this ad reminds us to be proud of what we have. I don’t always love my ba-donk-a-donk 🙂 but it’s a sign of all the hard work I’ve put in. Like the ad says, I do spend my time at the gym doing squats and lunges, not to make my butt smaller but more in shape. I guess, enhancing what I have. I’m thinking about printing this out and putting it next to a mirror in my house. It’s a good reminder to love yourself for who you are.

On another note, HAPPY FRIDAY! Any plans for the weekend? I’m hoping it doesn’t rain tomorrow so I can start working in the yard. We’re also going out to celebrate one of my best friends from college graduating from Grad School! It should be fun.

Workouts

Wednesday:

Ran 3 miles, Spin bike for 15 min, Abs

Thursday:

Ran 3 miles, Cleans: 1 set warmup and 3 sets of 10 reps, Bench Press and Abs: 1 set warmup and 3 sets of 10 reps

Officially Sand Volleyball Season

Yesterday marked the first day of sand volleyball of the year. Although the court was pretty hard and still a little wet from the last 2 weeks of constant rain, it was a lot of fun. I’m playing in a doubles league downtown at North Ave beach this summer with a lady from my gym, so we wanted to get out and practice a little bit beforehand. Without sounding too big-headed…I think we’ll be pretty good once we get used to each other’s style of play. I have never played doubles in a league so it will be interesting to see how it goes. I’m so used to playing indoor 6’s that I’m sure it’ll take a few games to transition.

Who else is playing in a league this summer?? I know a lot of people who are playing softball and kickball. In college, our intramural softball team was the “Sexy Pitches.” We were awesome.

I FINALLY updated the about me section. It’s a pretty high-level overview of who I am. Please if you want to know more…ask! Like I said in “About Me,” I love meeting new people and making new friends 🙂 Share a fun fact about yourself or ask me a question!

Workouts

Monday: Lifted and 30 min on the Stairmaster. My workout is below, I haven’t done cleans since College so I had one of the personal trainers at the gym help me out and make sure my form was okay. (I put a few links after the workout to help you out if you need it)
